Domino (HCL Domino, formerly IBM Notes, Lotus Notes Domino) software is different from any other application, there are no equivalent products to compare it to.
Lotus Notes Domino platform was introduced in 1989 by Lotus Development Corporation.
In December 2018 IBM announced it is selling the final components from its 1995 acquisition of Lotus to Indian firm HCL for $1.8 billion.
In 2021 there were already 10 million applications made with HCL Domino. Domino has reached version 14.
It is a conglomerate that includes a database system that have built-in e-mail.
It's not a relational database system like SQL or Oracle, but if each different document contains all fields defined correctly, it is possible to make applications that meet the requirements of a relational database.
A Notes database is a collection of unstructured data, combined with various design elements that allow to access and manipulate data, as a file with the ".nsf" extension (Notes Storage Facility). In this file are stored data elements, design, programming code. It has a strong security layer called Access Control List (ACL). Such a file can contain up to 256 GB of information (64 GB till Domino V10).
The data within a Notes database is organized as a set of records - each record is a document. A document consists of one or more fields, which can be text, numeric, date, or "rich text" (specific for Notes, that can contain formatted text, images, sound, video and other files types).
The three types of clients, one is similar to a browser, one for development and one for the administration.
The system also contains a HTTP/HTTPS web server, named Domino, it has its own programming language called LotusScript (but you can also use Java and JavaScript) and @Functions that can be placed in a formula anywhere a value of that type can be placed (similar to formulas used in Excel).
The applications can be accessed with any web browser instead of the Notes client.
This system is something like encapsulated Exchange, SQL Server, Access, Visual Basic, and IIS into a single product with a single front-end.
You can make workflow applications or any other application for an intranet or ERP, or a portal, or web pages.
The data can be displayed using specific Notes views (a view is a tabular presentations of a filtered data subset) or using generated tables developed using LotusScript and JavaScript, that can contain data from databases located on multiple servers, or calendars, or pages with charts.
It can work with or without SSL or VPN.
Using replication, a specific Notes facility, you can keep copies of the same database on multiple servers in sync, so that they automatically update themselves with the latest data and design elements, once or several times a day.
Using those described above and our experience we developed and improved over a decade an integrated application Delta intranet ERP, with a modular architecture and a single database, that can be taylored to the needs of any user group.
